What Is the EDI 940?
The EDI 940 Warehouse Shipping Order is sent by a depositor (product owner) to a warehouse or 3PL to authorize and instruct a shipment.
Key Data Elements
A typical 940 includes:
- Ship-to address and delivery requirements.
- Line items with product IDs, quantities, and lot/serial numbers.
- Carrier and service level instructions.
- Special handling requirements (hazmat, temperature, fragile).
- Reference numbers linking back to customer orders or POs.
940/945 Workflow
The 940 initiates the warehouse fulfillment process. Once the warehouse completes the shipment, it sends a 945 (Warehouse Shipping Advice) back to confirm what was actually shipped.
