EDI 940 - Warehouse Shipping Order

The EDI 940 instructs a warehouse or 3PL to ship inventory to a specified destination.

    What Is the EDI 940?

The EDI 940 Warehouse Shipping Order is sent by a depositor (product owner) to a warehouse or 3PL to authorize and instruct a shipment.

    Key Data Elements

    A typical 940 includes:

    • Ship-to address and delivery requirements.
    • Line items with product IDs, quantities, and lot/serial numbers.
    • Carrier and service level instructions.
    • Special handling requirements (hazmat, temperature, fragile).
    • Reference numbers linking back to customer orders or POs.

    940/945 Workflow

The 940 initiates the warehouse fulfillment process. Once the warehouse completes the shipment, it sends a 945 (Warehouse Shipping Advice) back to confirm what was actually shipped.
